DP08 – Weeklong Wrap Up

With over a hundred participants in ninety-some events and thousands of attendees, this was certainly a week to remember… All manner of exhibitions, workshops, open houses, book signings and more scuttled Philly’s creative community all around our sprawling city all in the name of local design. Disarmingly delightful and immensely insightful, DesignPhiladelphia 2008 has proven to be our biggest event to date. Here’s to another outstanding success for you-us and many more to come. :)

Ed Ruscha: Industrial Strength
FWM’s inaugural exhibition in its new permanent home. The show features Industrial Strength Sleep, a new tapestry created by Ed Ruscha in collaboration with FWM, in addition to several related works by the artist. Admission: $5 adults, $2 children

Daniel Eatock: Extra Medium
The work of London-based Daniel Eatock (b.1975) constitutes an inventive response to the everyday shaped by a keen sensitivity to formal and conceptual coincidence. Trained as a designer with clients that include the BBC and the Walker Art Center, Eatock strives to avoid subjective composition while reorienting the given values of readymade objects, standards, and procedures. “Extra Medium” is Eatock’s first individual exhibition in the United States and coincides with the publication of Imprint, a new monograph from Princeton Architectural Press.

A Clean Break: Pop up Neighborhood
A vacant lot becomes a prefab neighborhood for two weeks with full-scale modern, sustainable, affordable homes designed by international architects. Curated by Minima gallery, the outdoor exhibition also features urban farming, environmentally-friendly furniture, lighting, transportation, public art and other high-design, low-waste consumer products.

Product 01, Build 02
Product 01 presents output from the product design course in the University of Pennsylvania’s Integrated Product Design concentration from Spring of 2008. The course, taught by Josh Owen and assisted by Bryce Gibson, was designed to explore intersections of functionality and performance using an experimental platform to rediscover opportunities within the built environment to create domestic products.
Build 02 presents a portion of the output from sophomore industrial design studio at Philadelphia University from Spring of 2008. Several selected projects from this course will not be on view at this exhibit but will be shown at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City in May 2009.

Calder Jewelry
Throughout Alexander Calder’s life, the artist produced more than 1,800 jewelry works of art, each made entirely of hand. This is the first exhibition devoted exclusively to his unique body of jewelry work, and consists of approximately one hundred objects, including necklaces, bracelets, brooches, earrings, and tiaras. DogHaus 2008 Designer Show Home
Since its inception in 2003, DogHaus has become one of Philadelphia’s largest and most anticipated annual design homes uniting designers and animal lovers in an effort to help abused and neglected animals in the state of Pennsylvania. This year’s DogHaus will transform over 25 spaces of the Edgcumbe House in the heart of Chestnut Hill into an innovative yet livable showcase of design talent. $25 admission to benefit the PSPCA.

Snyderman-Works Galleries is honored to present Joyce J. Scott’s first-ever solo exhibition in Philadelphia. A forceful combination of historian, narrator and maker, nothing is off limits for Scott. She uses an unexpectedly heterogeneous array of materials – beadwork, hand-blown glass, appropriated African sculptures and masks, found objects- skillfully combining them into narrative sculptures. The installation at Snyderman-Works Galleries will occupy most of the 3000 square foot main exhibition space.

Charrette: Architecture for Humanity
In April 2008 Drexel’s Dept of Architecture & Interiors organized a Design Charrette for multi-disciplinary teams of students to address humanitarian problems. Cameron Sinclair, co-founder of Architecture for Humanity, gave a public lecture in the Arfaa Lecture Series and, over the following four days, led this charrette. The 13 teams of students responded to these humanitarian architectural challenges – Sustainable Portable Classrooms in Louisiana and Philadelphia, A Sport Acupuncture/ Archery Center, Bhutan, and a Sport Acupuncture/Futsal Center, San Paolo, Brazil.

Wool as Art
This exhibition will showcase the very graphic, new work by Turkey’s premier feltmaker, internationally recognized wool-master, Mehmet Girgic. Mr. Girgic uses unspun, naturally dyed wool for his art felts, created and rolled entirely by hand, in the ancient, traditional manner – with no machines or chemical intervention.

2008 DVGBC Sustainable Design Student Competition
The Delaware Valley Green Building Council and the Center for Architecture invite you to an exhibit of the winning entries from the 2008 DVGBC Student Sustainable Design Competition, showcasing local college students’ creative concepts for a sustainable agricultural high school campus. The display will include submissions from Temple University, Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, Community College of Philadelphia and Philadelphia University architecture students.

Classical Newari Paintings and Reinterpreted Decorative Arts
Mukti SIngh Thapa has revived the classical Newari style of Thangka painting with works of stunning detail. Blue Lotus Gallery has commissioned modern decorative arts made by Kathmandu Valley craftspeople based on traditional methods and motifs.

Mary McFadden: Goddesses
Inspired by the art and culture of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, Indian and African civilizations, renowned fashion designer Mary McFadden has assembled a pantheon of creations for the adornment of the feminine form. Gowns and clothing ensembles and jewelry spanning the designer’s thirty-five year career, as well as McFadden’s personal collection of textiles, are featured in this exhibition organized by Moore College of Art & Design in celebration of the College’s 160th Anniversary.
