Wholly-enterprising and oh-so-ridiculously-resourceful, the 100k house project aspires to build a modern and green home in Philly for $100,000 in construction costs. No easy feat by any means, the 2 bed/1 bath “loft townhome” ups the ante with a prophetic desire for sustainability ala LEED Platinum certification as well. Some of these features will include:
Rainwater collection
Solar-thermal hot water
Radiant floor heating
Passive ERV cooling
Low or no off-gassing finishes
Drought-tolerant permeable ivy green wall
What’s more, the 1,150sqft two-story space is currently documented for you and for me via an online journal maintained by corporate-culture-eschewing, developer-visionary Chad Ludeman. Design-dilettantes and arch-aficionados would do well to stay tuned for updates: beyond offering some great advice for outfitting your own green home, this little project that could hopes to break ground in a matter of mere months. Good stuff.
From 100k House:
The 100K House is an attempt to offer an affordable home that places a high priority on quality, design, energy efficiency, health and sustainability rather than “bells & whistles” that can drive the price of new construction out of reach from the majority of home buyers. Extensive work has gone into the upfront design of the home, including advanced energy modeling, to ensure that the final homeowner is getting the most bang for their buck in all of the key values of the home – design, quality, energy efficiency, health and sustainability.
